Question: how are those New Year's resolutions coming? I suspect by the end of the next week most of you will have an answer. Don't worry. The top 10 results according to Murphy's Law make sure you're up, or make you laugh…
- If anything can go wrong, it will.
- If nothing can go wrong, it will anyway.
- Nothing is as easy as it seems.
- Everything takes longer than you think.
- The other line always moves faster.
- The probability of a peanut butter sandwich landing facedown on the carpet is directly proportional to the cost of the carpet.
- The light at the end of the tunnel is most likely from an oncoming train.
- The wind blows right after a trip to the hairdresser.
- If everything is going your way, you're on the wrong side of the road.
- Murphy was an optimist.
Murphy once asked his wife if he was a good husband. She said the good husband a strong, caring, and sensitive; and that he had all but three of these qualities. Murphy's shortcomings are well documented. We have a lot in common with him when are self-improvement depends on ourselves. The truth is, we cannot buy her own reason or strength save ourselves from arsons. Only the Lord can do that, which is why we need resolution number one.
For a truly happy new year we need God's prescription as it is recorded in the scripture. And the second book written by Moses called Exodus, is the first word (Hebrew: dabar) on the list of 10 expressing God's will for our lives. It is resolution number one…
- You shall have no other gods before me. (20:3)
In the beginning at creation it was written in man's heart, but after the fall man relied more on himself and his own spin to justify sin. Ever since, we have been in trouble, especially when we try to make ourselves better without God and resolution number one.
Martin Luther used to teach at his kitchen table that whatever your heart clings to and confides in, that is your God. This is where most people fail to understand how important it is to have resolution number one. Nothing should come in front of God, or take his place in our lives; nothing should come between us, and yet our spin on sin repositions God on the priority list all the time.
This new year resolve to keep God at the top. It is most certainly true that he has kept his promise to save you. He has you at the top of his list of redemption for the sake of his Son. Through the Word and Sacrament Ministry of his church, it is clear that he has loved you and forgiven you, in spite of shortcomings and your spin with sin.
Resolution #1 – God is number one, there is no one else. This is the solution. God has sent Christ to not only keep his will in the first word, but all 10 of his "words" spoken on the list. And since he has also given us faith in Christ, we know that when we stand before our heavenly father, he won't see our spin with sin, but only his son who won the victory for us on the cross. It is most certainly true that Christ has provided the way to fear, love, and trust in God above all things. He has kept resolution number one.
See you in church.
